Fighting for Access to Justice:
Court Reporter Shortage Lawsuit

In case you missed it, the California Supreme Court has accepted FVAP’s case addressing the ongoing court reporter shortage—a major step forward in tackling this constitutional crisis. Our legal team is working tirelessly to defend the rights of low-income litigants across California.

Last month, 13 organizations and legal experts filed powerful amicus briefs in support of our case, underscoring just how much is at stake. The Court has also invited the Attorney General to weigh in with a brief due June 30.

We’re grateful for the growing media attention and community support.

Staff Spotlight:
Cory Hernandez Joins Prestigious Fellowship

We’re proud to announce that Cory Hernandez (they/them), FVAP’s Senior Managing Attorney, has been selected for the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers’ 2025–2026 Fellowship Program.
After a rigorous selection process, Cory was chosen for their appellate ability, commitment to high-quality appellate practice, and strong character and professional reputation. This prestigious program is designed to elevate the next generation of appellate leaders in California.

Cory’s selection is a testament to their extraordinary talent and dedication—and we’re honored to have their leadership shaping FVAP’s impact in appellate courts statewide.

Resource Alert:
Form Briefs for Limited Civil Appeals

New Rule. New Tools. Greater Access.

Starting January 1, 2025, a new rule from the California Judicial Council will make it easier to appeal limited civil cases (involving $35,000 or less).

Rule 8.883(b)(4) allows litigants to use new, user-friendly fillable form briefs for:

  • APP-200: Appellant’s Opening Brief
  • APP-201: Respondent’s Brief
  • APP-202: Appellant’s Reply Brief

Each comes with a clear instruction sheet to help users file them correctly—even without legal help.

These forms simplify the process for self-represented litigants and save time and money for attorneys.

Access the forms: California Court Forms Directory

Please help us spread the word—share with your networks in legal aid, court self-help centers, and advocacy organizations.
