Dear Supporters,

As we navigate the complexities of our lives during this election year, it's crucial to shed light on an issue that affects many—domestic violence. October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to recognize the experiences of countless survivors and to advocate for change.

FVAP's work is dedicated to supporting survivors in appellate court—those who have often been overlooked in the justice system. We invite you to explore and help us elevate the work FVAP provides. Together, we can foster awareness and spark action toward a society that prioritizes safety, support, and healing. Join us in making a difference.

Onward,

Deborah

Public Service Announcement

If you do not know how to support someone experiencing abuse, The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) has released a PSA video in both English and Spanish that demonstrates how you can help, and connect survivors to WomensLaw.org's Email Hotline to access free legal services.

FVAP is dedicated to breaking the cycle of abuse and creating a world that is better for future generations. We accomplish this by overturning dangerous trial court decisions and setting new legal standards when we win appeals for our clients. Click on each case name to learn how we helped each survivor access the protection they deserve.

In re Ca.M.DCFS v. LC Amicus | Published

FVAP filed an amicus brief in this case discussing how "failure to protect" – a charge leveled at non-abusing parents in dependency courts to remove their children – is a form of victim-blaming, particularly impacting LGBTQ+ parents and women of color. It outlines the challenges these groups encounter in seeking assistance, like getting restraining orders or pressing charges. The brief offers recommendations for the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to assist protective (non-abusing) parents and maintain family unity, lessening the harm on children witnessing domestic violence. We are thrilled that the mother in this case had this dangerous court decision reversed!

In re B.H. | Published

FVAP was successful in the partial publication of In re B.H. The opinion clarifies legal standards for the survivor-parent facing removal of their children due to exposure to domestic violence.

State v. Sanchez | Published

FVAP was successful in the State v Sanchez publication! This publication is significant for survivors because it recognizes coercive control in a criminal context, and furthers public policy of protecting survivors both in criminal and civil courts by acknowledging that witness tampering is a form of control.
