| Dear *{{First Name}}*,
As my first year at Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP) comes to an end, I want to thank you for your gifts, messages of support, and for reading the communications my team puts out (like this newsletter). I love hearing why FVAP is important to you. At the same time, I have to call attention to something on my mind—the negative impact that election years can have on fundraising for non-profits like FVAP.
As Election Day nears, giving is historically channeled toward political campaigns. This makes sense because of what’s at stake. But regardless of who holds the highest offices in our country, FVAP staff will continue to fight for the safety of survivors of domestic violence and their children. I would argue that this is an equally critical issue. FVAP’s work to overturn dangerous trial decisions and advance protections for survivors has the potential to end domestic violence for individual families and create a ripple effect for thousands of others facing similar situations. This impact is why I am personally dedicated to FVAP’s cause.
So instead of making an either/or decision, I want to offer some additional ways to make an impact this election season, tailored to the time and resources you have available: -
(5 minutes) Donate now or purchase early-bird tickets to attend our signature fundraiser, "Battle of the Bands: Banding Together to End Domestic Violence," on September 26.
-
(10 minutes) Shop for a cause. All purchases from our merchandise store help level the playing field for survivors. I personally love the “Until there is justice” and “Injustice? Appeal that” lines (see picture below).
-
(1 hour) Attend our August 7 lunchtime event, "State of Survivor Justice: A Conversation in Venture Philanthropy.” This is an excellent opportunity to increase awareness of issues for survivors, FVAP’s mission, and how you can positively contribute to the state of survivor justice.
- (4 hours) Volunteer your time. We always need extra hands to help with fundraising, legal research, and more. No experience required.
I greatly appreciate your continued support, and together, we can make a positive impact during this crucial time. Thank you for your unwavering support. In community, Thao Dang Weldy Development Director |

In re A.P. et al. (July) | Publication California In re A.P. et al. is related to the importance of recognizing violations of temporary restraining orders as abuse and the significance of not denying restraining orders based solely on physical separation of the parties. Additionally, the case emphasizes that certain types of stay-away orders may not provide enough protection for domestic violence survivors. |

Bassi v Bassi (California): FVAP successfully requested publication of this opinion explaining that unwanted contact, harassment, and disturbing the peace are abuse, even without threats or violence, and even if the conduct is part of a lawsuit. The published opinion will guide courts throughout California hearing cases like Bassi v Bassi.
FVAP would like to thank the team at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher who review unpublished opinions daily to help FVAP identify cases that, if published, could advance survivor safety in the courts! We are also grateful to the 11 domestic violence, public interest, and legal aid organizations, who joined our request. |
