Requesting Statements of Decision in Family Law and Domestic Violence Cases (2017)
Many trial attorneys and self-represented litigants are not aware of the importance of requesting a Statement of Decision (SOD), or how and when to do so. SODs are very helpful if a party seeks to appeal the trial court’s order, or to modify the court order later on (e.g., in an ongoing child custody case). This training explains what a SOD is, the legal basis for requesting a SOD, why a SOD is important, and how to request a SOD. It also covers when to make this request, what a SOD should include, and how to object to a SOD that is insufficient. A case study will be used to illustrate the main points.
