Training with Hon. Judge Edwards: April 11 in San Jose

March 27, 2018 by FVAP

FVAP attorney Anya Emerson and Hon. Judge Leonard Edwards (retired) will present a training in San Jose on April 11 to Dependency attorneys of Santa Clara County, “Domestic Violence in Dependency Court: What Attorneys & Judges Should Know.” This popular training will be presented 12:00-1:30 p.m. at 201 N. First Street in San Jose.

Description:
Beyond substance abuse and mental illness, domestic violence is one of the most prevalent factors bringing a family into the dependency system. Because of the high incidence of domestic violence across the population, and because of the substantial correlation between domestic violence and actual abuse or risk of abuse of children, both dependency judges and dependency attorneys must frequently address issues of domestic violence. This training focuses on important dependency cases addressing domestic violence as a basis for jurisdiction and removal, reasonable efforts to prevent removal of a child from a parent, reasonable services, restraining orders issued under the Welfare and Institutions Code, and related issues. This training also addresses advocacy and trial strategies when representing survivors of domestic violence in a dependency case.
