Parentage and the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (2018)
Many family law practitioners and litigants may not fully understand how the DVPA, custody and visitation, and parentage work together. This presentation will walk through the basics of the statutory provisions and relevant case law to help practicing attorneys, advocates, and self-represented litigants understand these complex provisions. The content is largely geared toward helping DV survivors, especially those who identify as LGBTQI+, understand how to establish parentage when the parent does not have a biological or adoptive connection to the child. Below the video, in the Accompanying Materials section on this webpage, you can find PDF documents of the PowerPoint slidedeck and the resources sheet that provides citations and resources for your review.
Presenters: National Center for Lesbian Rights Staff Attorney Ming Wong, Esq.; and FVAP Legal Fellow Cory Hernandez, Esq.
MCLE Credit: 1.0 hours (Instructions on applying for MCLE credit below video. Available for CA attorneys only.)
Closed captioning available.
